My brother was diagnosed with a complex medical condition. He was a pharmacist and I was a hospital wellness director, but even with our combined knowledge of the medical system, his diagnosis was still overwhelming. He needed help with appointments, daily care, weighing treatment options and weighing outcomes. As his healthcare advocate I witnessed firsthand how difficult it is for anyone, no matter their background, to navigate the healthcare system. It's just too complex and when you're already fighting for your life you just don't have much left in the tank for anything else. It was this personal experience that made me realize how desperately healthcare advocates are needed. If you have a complex medical condition you don't have to face it alone.
